It was a unique architectural experience to spend the weekend in a home designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright. This privately owned home is one of just a few in the United States available for short-term stays, and it had been on our bucket list to experience while Lisa is in Wisconsin.

The six Burnham Block homes are the earliest examples of affordable, small-scale dwellings designed by Wright. They were part of a series of modest homes created for a broad audience that Wright called the “American System-Built Homes.” The concept involved cutting lumber and other materials in a mill or factory and then bringing them to the site for assembly. The system reduced material waste and saved a substantial portion of the wages typically paid to skilled tradesmen. These homes were designed for people with limited means—an interesting reminder that Wright’s work wasn’t exclusively about grand, custom-designed residences.

More than 100 years later, the house has been beautifully restored and remains a true Frank Lloyd Wright jewel.We had a wonderful weekend here—and loved the chance to experience a little piece of architectural history firsthand.
